Didsbury: The River Mersey really took a beating recently. Heavy rains caused the embankment to wash away, leading to some serious flooding on New Year’s Day.

Over 400 folks had to be rescued, and they were taken to safety on boats. Palatine Road was completely underwater, and power cuts left many in nearby flats and a hotel in a tough spot.

It was quite the scene, with fire crews, police, and paramedics all rushing to help. Videos from the area showed a massive emergency response as teams worked hard to get people out.

The River Mersey hit its highest levels in 66 years, flooding around 400 homes and forcing about 500 people from the Britannia Country Park Hotel, which was housing asylum seekers.

In total, 469 people from Didsbury and Stockport were rescued and given alternative places to stay. It was a real community effort.

New photos showed how the raised embankment was completely gone after hours of rain on New Year’s Eve. Fletcher Moss Park was almost entirely underwater, with cars floating around.

The Environment Agency said they managed to protect over 21,000 properties in the northwest. A major incident was declared in Greater Manchester due to the severe flooding.

They confirmed that part of the River Mersey’s embankment, which helps prevent flooding, had collapsed. Crews were on-site for emergency repairs.

Residents were understandably shaken, with many asking how this could happen so suddenly. Palatine Road was one of the hardest-hit areas, and boats were sent out to rescue people trapped in their homes.
