Ventura County: Ready to kick off 2025? You can enjoy some amazing hikes along the beautiful coastline and in the Santa Monica Mountains. It’s a great way to start the year!

California State Parks is hosting ranger-led hikes on December 31 and January 1. You can find all the details and a list of hikes at parks.ca.gov/FirstDayHikes.

First up is Carpinteria State Beach on December 31. It’s an easy 2-mile walk from the visitor center to the harbor seal rookery. You’ll learn about the beach’s natural and cultural history along the way.

Meet at the visitor center at 9:30 a.m. The address is 205 Palm Ave., Carpinteria. Just a heads up, parking costs $10 for the day. Don’t forget to bring water and dress comfortably!

On New Year’s Day, you can explore the Backbone Trail at Point Mugu State Park. This 5.4-mile hike offers stunning ocean views and native plants. It starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Ray Miller Trailhead.

Parking there is $3 an hour or $12 for the day. Make sure to wear long pants and hiking shoes, and bring snacks and water. Kids 12 and older can join, but no dogs allowed!

If you’re in Calabasas on January 1, Malibu Creek State Park has two hikes at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The morning hike is 5 miles, while the afternoon one is a shorter 2-mile trek for families with kids aged 6 to 12.

Parking is $3 an hour or $12 for the day. Remember to wear sturdy shoes and bring water. Rain will cancel the hikes, so keep an eye on the weather!

At Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park, you can choose from four hikes on January 1. They’ll take you through beautiful views and share the history of the area. The Welcome Walk is perfect for all ages!

Meet at the Andora Trailhead at 11 a.m. Street parking is available. Don’t forget sunscreen and plenty of water. Well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome, too!

Lastly, if you’re into off-roading, Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area is the place to be. Bring your dirt bike or ATV for a fun 10-mile ride at 1 p.m. on January 1.

Parking costs $5, and you’ll need safety gear. Kids must be with an adult, and no dogs are allowed. Heavy rain or snow will cancel the ride.
