Christchurch: So, here’s the scoop. Adventure Wonderland, a theme park in Hurn, wanted to set up a big car park to offer cheaper parking than Bournemouth Airport. But guess what? Their plans just got shot down.
They had already started using the land for parking back in May 2023, but now they were looking for official permission. The site had 800 spaces, which is a lot, especially since the park had closed its outdoor rides last year due to money issues.
Now, Bournemouth Airport wasn’t having any of it. They said this whole idea was just wrong and that they could provide all the parking needed right at the airport without messing with the greenbelt. They were pretty clear that the new car park would make things unsafe for pedestrians trying to walk between the two places.
Plus, the airport folks pointed out that the number of signs Adventure Wonderland wanted to put up was just over the top. They were concerned about safety and the environment, saying the car park would be a permanent fixture, which isn’t what the area needs.
Even the local parish council chimed in, saying there were no real benefits for the community. They felt it was just a way for the park to make money by exploiting the greenbelt. They were worried that if this got approved, it would set a bad example for future developments.
On the flip side, Adventure Wonderland is planning to reopen its outdoor area this year with some new attractions. They’re hoping that once they do, the car park will be used mainly by their visitors. But for now, it looks like they’ll have to rethink their parking strategy.
In the end, the planning folks decided that the car park didn’t fit with what the land was meant for and that it would hurt the greenbelt. They also mentioned that there wasn’t a safe way for people to get to and from the site, which is a big deal.
