Leicester: So, there’s this restaurant called Chaiiwala that wanted to stay open later, but the city said no. They were worried about noise and litter from late-night customers. It seems like the locals weren’t too keen on the idea either.
Chaiiwala asked to keep the doors open until midnight on weekdays and 1am on weekends. But the council turned them down, even though the restaurant claimed it wouldn’t be a noisy place since it’s more of a sit-down spot.
According to the restaurant’s team, a lot of folks in the area walk there instead of driving, which is great for the environment. They also mentioned that later hours would help during Ramadan when people are looking for late-night meals after fasting.
In their application, they argued that restaurants usually don’t cause as much noise or litter as takeaways do. They said that since customers sit down and eat, it keeps things more controlled and less rowdy.
They also pointed out that restaurants manage their waste better, so there’s less chance of littering compared to takeaways where people might eat on the go.
But the city planners weren’t convinced. They felt that allowing Chaiiwala to stay open later would disturb the neighborhood, especially with cars coming and going at night.
So, for now, the late-night plans are off the table. Chaiiwala can appeal the decision, but it’s not clear if they will. We’ll have to wait and see what happens next!
