Lorne: There’s a bit of a situation brewing in Lorne and Jan Luc. Locals are being asked to keep an eye out for a sneaky weed that’s making itself at home in gardens. This isn’t just any weed; it’s the South African Weed Orchid, and it’s pretty invasive.
The Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority is sounding the alarm. They want residents to help tackle this pesky plant, especially around George, Francis, and Charles Streets near Queens Park. If you spot it, they’re asking you to pull it out ASAP.
But it’s not just a local issue. This weed has also been spotted in South Australia and parts of Western Australia. It loves disturbed areas, so it’s popping up in private yards and nature reserves alike.
Evan Francis, the Environment Manager at GORCPA, explained why this weed is such a pain. Each plant can produce tons of tiny seeds that can travel far and wide, sticking to clothes and pets. They can even hang around in the soil for years.
This weed is a real bully, outcompeting our native orchids for sunlight, nutrients, and space. The team is working hard to manage it, but it’s a tough battle. They’re focusing on high-value areas to protect our beautiful coastline for future generations.
So, if you’re in the area, keep your eyes peeled and help out if you can. Every little bit helps in keeping our environment safe!
