Sunderland: So, there’s this new footbridge almost done and set to open this summer. It’s part of the Riverside Sunderland regeneration project, which is pretty exciting for the area.

Community groups are getting involved by suggesting names for the bridge, and then everyone will get to vote on their favorites. It’s a cool way to let the locals have a say in what this new landmark will be called.

Councillor Michael Mordey, the leader of Sunderland City Council, mentioned how much the community loved naming the Northern Spire. He really wants people to feel connected to this new bridge, which will see tons of foot traffic once it opens.

He’s been chatting with residents and can feel the pride they have for this project. It’s all about giving them a chance to pick a name that resonates with them and reflects the significance of the bridge in the evolving Riverside Sunderland area.

Plus, this project has already created 21 local jobs, four apprenticeships, and six work experience placements. Last month, they hit a big milestone when they removed the strand jacks that lifted the central part of the bridge.

This footbridge is just one piece of the larger Riverside Sunderland regeneration plan, which aims to double the city center’s population and create workspace for up to 10,000 jobs. Exciting times ahead for Sunderland!
