49ers Required to Conduct Open Search for Offensive Coordinator Position
The 49ers must interview external candidates for the OC role despite plans to promote Klay Kubiak to the position

San Francisco: So, it looks like the 49ers can’t just hand the offensive coordinator job to Klay Kubiak after all. They’ve got to follow the NFL rules, which means they need to interview at least two outside candidates. This is all about making sure there’s a fair process in place.
Even though Coach Kyle Shanahan was ready to promote Kubiak, the league has its guidelines. A report from CBS Sports made it clear that the 49ers will have to conduct an open search for the OC position.
Since Shanahan took over as head coach back in 2017, the team has had a bit of a revolving door at the OC spot. Mike McDaniel was the last one to hold the title in 2021 before moving on to coach the Dolphins.
Now, Kubiak, who’s been doing a lot of the work behind the scenes, is finally getting recognized for his efforts. Shanahan mentioned that Kubiak has been acting as a non-play-calling OC for the last couple of seasons, even if he didn’t have the official title.
In the recent game against the Cardinals, Kubiak called plays and the offense looked pretty good, racking up 436 yards. But Shanahan will still be the one calling the plays moving forward, as only one coach can talk directly to the quarterback during games.
It’s all about giving Kubiak the credit he deserves for his contributions to the team’s offense. He’s been a key part of the game-planning alongside other coaches, and now it’s time for the 49ers to find the right fit for the OC role.
