Dublin: A sad incident occurred at Garda Headquarters in Phoenix Park. A repair worker, John Hurley, lost his life after falling from a telecommunications mast.

Jack, as he was known, was 73 and had been doing this kind of work for over 40 years. He was up about 30 feet when the accident happened around 10 am on January 26, 2024.

His colleague, Norman Walsh, was with him at the time. They had worked together for a decade, and Norman had to identify Jack’s body afterward, which must have been incredibly tough.

The Health and Safety Authority is looking into the incident. An inspector mentioned that they might consider criminal proceedings, so the investigation is still ongoing.

During the inquest, it was confirmed that Jack died from multiple traumatic injuries. The coroner has postponed the case until July 14 to get updates on the investigation.

This is a heartbreaking reminder of the risks workers face every day. Our thoughts are with Jack’s family and friends during this difficult time.
