Nottingham: It’s heartbreaking to hear that around 80 women have reportedly been killed by men in the UK this year. This figure comes from a group called Counting Dead Women, which tracks these tragic incidents.

They shared their findings with The Independent, highlighting that these deaths involve cases where a man has been charged. But there are even more cases—11 women died under suspicious circumstances without any charges filed.

Karen Ingala Smith, who started Counting Dead Women, believes the real numbers are likely much higher. She pointed out that many women celebrating New Year’s Eve this year won’t be around to see 2026.

She mentioned that the death toll is probably an undercount. There could be women who were killed recently, or whose bodies haven’t been discovered yet. Plus, they often find cases that the media didn’t cover well.

According to the Femicide Census, which Karen launched, a woman is killed by a man in the UK every three days on average. It’s a grim reality that we need to face as a society.

Wendy Francis, a 61-year-old woman, was found dead in her home in Worcester earlier this year. Her daughter’s boyfriend was charged with her murder after a brutal knife attack.

Then there’s Rachel McDaid, who was killed in Nottinghamshire. Her estranged husband strangled her with a bootlace and has been sentenced to life in prison.

The Bishop of London has spoken out, saying we need to take action to prevent families from suffering the loss of their loved ones due to such violence. Dame Sarah Mullally, the first woman in her role, emphasized the deep impact these murders have on families.
