Southport: A heartbreaking case has come to light involving a 12-year-old girl named Semina Halliwell. She tragically took an overdose after alleging she was raped by an older boy. The police have stated they took her claims very seriously during an inquest.
Semina passed away in June 2021 after taking medication at home. Her mother, Rachel, shared that Semina had confided in her about the assault months earlier. She felt that if there had been better support from authorities, her daughter might still be alive.
During the inquest, a police officer, PC Paula Carney, recounted how Semina reported being pressured by a boy on Snapchat. She said he had assaulted her on two occasions. The police took her allegations seriously, but there were concerns about the investigation process.
DC Chris Loughead, another officer involved, explained that he had to inform Semina about the challenges of pursuing her case. He mentioned that it could take a long time and that there were no forensic evidence or medical reports to support her claims.
Semina’s family was supportive, but there were moments of pressure that made her hesitant. Ultimately, she decided not to pursue the complaint initially but later changed her mind. Sadly, just a day before her scheduled interview, she took an overdose.
The inquest is ongoing, and it’s a reminder of the importance of mental health support. If you or someone you know is struggling, there are resources available to help.
