Newton Abbot: Exciting news for the racecourse! They’ve just brought in John Baker as the new chief executive. He’s stepping in after Patrick Masterson retired last year. Patrick had quite the run, spending 35 years there, with 25 of those as managing director.
John isn’t new to the scene. He used to run Aintree Racecourse, where he was in charge during the famous Grand National. He really helped put Aintree on the map with some cool initiatives. After leaving Aintree in 2020, he took on a role at Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners, turning the marina into a lively spot for both the community and businesses.
According to a spokesperson from Newton Abbot, John’s got a great mix of experience and fresh ideas. He’s all about honoring the racecourse’s history while pushing for innovation and sustainability. Sounds like he’s got big plans!
John’s also keen on connecting with local communities more. He wants to make the racecourse a go-to place for racing fans and visitors. The racing season kicks off on April 10, and let’s hope the weather plays nice this year. Last year was a bit of a washout with six meetings canceled due to a soggy course.
