Ebbw Vale: So, there’s been a bit of a stir about the train situation in Gwent. Apparently, the Ebbw Vale line has been seeing a lot more cancellations lately, and folks are not happy about it.

Peredur Owen Griffiths, the local Senedd member, is sounding the alarm. He’s been looking into this after hearing from a constituent who’s had enough of the unreliable service. This guy’s son depends on the train to get to work in Cardiff, and he’s been let down way too often.

The numbers are pretty eye-opening. In the current financial year, about 4.5% of train services have been cancelled. That’s a jump from 2.9% last year and a huge difference from just 0.8% back in 2020. It’s clear something’s not right.

Peredur is calling on the Labour Cabinet Secretary to step up and fix this mess. He’s saying that for people who rely on this line, a cancelled train can mean being late for work, which is just not cool.

Even with all the money pumped into improving the trains in Wales, the performance on this line seems to be getting worse. Peredur is urging the government to make sure public transport is reliable if they want people to actually use it.

On the flip side, a spokesperson from Transport for Wales mentioned that the cancellations are in line with the UK average but have been higher than expected lately. They pointed to a shortage of trains and some weather issues as culprits.

They also highlighted that they’ve recently doubled the service frequency on the Ebbw Vale line and introduced new trains made in Newport. They’re optimistic that as more new trains roll out, things will get better.
