Québec: So, the Quebec government is getting a bit anxious about migrants crossing into the U.S. illegally from Canada. They’re asking the RCMP to step up and send more resources to the border.
François Bonnardel, the public security minister, shared this news in Quebec City. It’s just a week before Donald Trump takes office as U.S. president, which adds a bit of urgency to the situation.
Trump has been making noise about possibly slapping tariffs on Canadian exports if Canada doesn’t tighten up its border security. So, you can see why Quebec is feeling the pressure.
The Swanton sector is the main area of concern. This region includes parts of Quebec, Ontario, and U.S. states like Vermont and New York. It’s a busy spot for crossings.
In fact, out of 26,000 illegal crossings reported this year, a whopping 19,000 happened in the Swanton area. That’s a lot!
Bonnardel mentioned that there are already 800 federal and provincial officers working in that sector. But if things get worse, Quebec is ready to send 300 more provincial police officers within 48 hours. They’re not taking any chances!
