Canberra: The Albanese government is rolling out a $50 million plan to help farmers and truckers get electric vehicles. This move aims to cut down emissions in key industries.
So, here’s the deal: if you’re eligible and take out a loan for a $60,000 EV, you could save about $1,700 in interest over five years. Not too shabby, right?
Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen is all about giving Aussies more options for cleaner cars. He believes that EVs and other clean tech can really help businesses save on energy costs.
This loan program is open to farmers, freight companies, and small to medium-sized businesses. Last year, over 4,000 EVs were sold through a similar scheme, which is pretty impressive.
In December, the government also announced a $150 million initiative to help workers earning under $100,000 buy EVs. It’s all part of a bigger push for cleaner transportation.
New rules called the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard kicked in on January 1. These rules mean car makers need to meet certain CO2 targets to sell their vehicles in Australia.
The government believes this will lead to more eco-friendly cars on the market and save people money at the pump. However, the Coalition is saying that Labor is rushing this green transition.
Many other countries, like the US and Canada, have similar standards and incentives to boost EV adoption. And it looks like more Aussies are jumping on the EV bandwagon, with sales rising significantly in recent years.
