Plans for a new bus hub in Derby face challenges as operators express concerns about potential delays and infrastructure readiness

Derby: So, there’s this new bus hub planned for Boulton Moor, right? It’s supposed to be a big deal for public transport, but it looks like there are some hiccups along the way. The hub is meant to replace an old park-and-ride idea that didn’t pan out. Now, they’re talking about using automatic number-plate recognition for parking, which has raised some eyebrows.
Bus operators are a bit worried about delays if they have to reroute their services to this new hub. They do like the idea of better connections, though. The hub is set to be built near the A6 Thulston Roundabout, off Shardlow Road and Chellaston Lane, which sounds convenient.
If the South Derbyshire District Council gives the green light, the hub will have 30 parking spots, including some for electric vehicles. There’ll also be a bus stop with live info on bus times and connections to key places. Plus, they’re planning to add bike stands and charging points for e-bikes and scooters.
This hub is part of a bigger plan for the Boulton Moor area, which is seeing a lot of new homes being built. They’re also planning shops, a petrol station, and even some drive-through restaurants. It’s all part of making the area more livable, but some folks are worried that the infrastructure isn’t keeping up with the rapid housing development.
Originally, they wanted a huge park-and-ride with 1,000 spaces, but that idea got scrapped because it was deemed unfeasible. Now, they’re focusing on this new transport hub, which they hope will be more sustainable.
When they got the initial approval, there were some rules about not using the automatic number plate recognition system, but it seems that’s changed. Now, they’re saying the parking will be monitored to prevent unauthorized use, which makes sense.
They’re also planning to have electric vehicle charging spots that will be monitored to ensure they’re used properly. It’s all about making sure the right vehicles are using the right spaces.
There’s already a bus route that started in September, but some operators are hesitant to change their routes to serve the new hub. Arriva, one of the main bus companies, says they’re on board with improving the bus stops nearby, but they don’t want to divert their routes just yet.
Trentbarton, another bus operator, is also cautious about making changes. They’ve been in talks about the hub but haven’t committed to any route changes. It seems like everyone is trying to figure out the best way to make this work.
