New York: So, there’s been a pretty shocking incident at the Marcy correctional facility. Governor Kathy Hochul just announced some big changes after a prisoner named Robert Brooks died following a brutal beating by guards. The footage of what happened is just heartbreaking.

Hochul visited the facility and met with inmates to hear about their experiences. She was visibly upset about Brooks’ death and said the system really let him down. She’s determined to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again.

To kick things off, she’s pushing for $400 million to get more body cameras and improve oversight in prisons. There’s also going to be a new investigations team and a whistleblower hotline to help keep things in check.

Brooks was handcuffed when the guards attacked him, and he died the next day in a hospital. The footage shows him being punched and kicked while he was restrained, which is just awful. His family is understandably furious and wants justice.

The state’s attorney general and the FBI are looking into the case, and Hochul has already fired 14 staff members involved. This isn’t the first time Marcy has faced criticism for its treatment of inmates, and it seems like there’s a lot more work to do to ensure safety and fairness in the system.
