Premiers are asking Trudeau to extend the charitable donation deadline due to a postal strike affecting donations this holiday season

Toronto: So, Canada’s premiers are really pushing for a change. They want Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to extend the deadline for claiming charitable donations on tax returns. They’re asking for it to go until the end of February.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford sent a letter to Trudeau about this. He’s the chair of the Council of the Federation, so he’s got some weight behind his request.
Ford mentioned that charities are feeling the pinch because of the Canada Post strike. This strike caused a huge slowdown in mail, and it’s really hurt donations. The holidays are tough enough without this added stress!
The idea is to let people send in their donations a bit later but still get credit for the 2024 tax year. It’s a smart move, especially since the Salvation Army reported a 50% drop in holiday donations this year, all thanks to the strike.
As of now, Trudeau’s office hasn’t said anything back. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out!
