Calgary: So, it looks like the Prairies are in for quite a ride as we kick off 2025. There’s going to be a wild temperature divide across the region next week.
Depending on where you are, you might be feeling temperatures that are either way above or way below what’s normal for this time of year.
This week, we’ve been enjoying some warmer weather thanks to a high-pressure system hanging around. But that’s about to change.
As we head into the weekend, that high pressure is moving east, and a blast of Arctic air is coming down from the Rockies.
During the first few days of January, we’ll see a significant north-south temperature split. Up north, it’ll be 10 degrees above seasonal, while the southern and western parts will be much chillier.
Don’t worry, it won’t be as brutal as the cold snap we had in early December, but it’s still going to be chilly.
By next week, forecasters are saying daytime highs in southern Alberta, including Calgary and Edmonton, might only reach the mid-teens below zero. And places like Saskatoon and Regina could see temperatures dipping into the minus-20s.
With the wind, it’s going to feel even colder, with wind chill making it feel like minus-30 in some areas. Just a little breeze can make the cold bite even more.
But hang tight! This cold spell won’t last forever. The Arctic air will gradually move east toward the Great Lakes, bringing chilly temps to Winnipeg and southern Manitoba.
