Powys: A new bridge will be built over the Montgomery Canal. The council approved this on February 3. The old crossing will be removed.
The new plans also include realigning Carreghofa Lane. A new junction with the B4398 will be created. The canal and towpath will be realigned too.
They will improve the play area car park and create new public open space. Landscaping will also be part of the project.
The Canal & River Trust submitted the planning application in July 2024. They are working with Powys County Council to restore the Montgomery Canal.
Funding for the new bridge comes from the Levelling Up Fund. The existing No. 93 bridge is outdated for modern traffic.
The proposal aims to maintain vehicle access via Carreghofa Lane. It will remove the current crossing that blocks the canal.
The new design will allow boats and towpath users to pass underneath. A modern road will be built above.
The council’s report noted the project considers the historic environment. It will benefit the canal corridor and surrounding communities.
Overall, the development connects to the wider restoration of the canal. The council granted conditional consent for the project.
