Newfoundland: A powerful storm is brewing and it’s expected to hit this weekend. This storm is no joke; it’s being called a ‘weather bomb’ because it’s rapidly intensifying. We’re talking about strong winds, heavy snow, and even some coastal flooding.
Newfoundland is really going to feel the brunt of it. Special weather statements are already out for much of the island, so folks need to be prepared.
Residents are being urged to secure anything loose outside and to avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary. Safety first, right?
As for the timing, the storm will mostly hang out at sea on Saturday but will start to pick up intensity as it gets closer to Newfoundland and Labrador. By Saturday night, those strong easterly winds will kick in, and heavy snow will start falling.
On Sunday morning, the snow will switch to rain for the Avalon Peninsula, which might keep snow accumulation lower there. But central and western Newfoundland will still see plenty of snow throughout the day.
Some areas could get hit with 20-30 cm of snow, especially in the tougher spots. And with those strong winds, blizzard-like conditions could make things really tricky for drivers.
Speaking of winds, gusts could reach between 80-100 km/h, with some coastal areas possibly seeing gusts up to 115 km/h. That’s serious stuff! High waves and rough surf are expected, which could lead to coastal erosion and damage to infrastructure.
Power outages are also a real possibility due to those strong winds. So, it’s best to stay updated and be cautious out there!
