Ottawa: So, things are getting pretty tense for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberals. Chrystia Freeland just stepped down as finance minister, and now there’s a lot of chatter about whether Trudeau should stick around or call it quits.
With the polls looking rough and the next election looming in 2025, Trudeau’s at a crossroads. He really needs to figure out if he’s going to stay in the game or step aside.
One option is a cabinet shuffle. A former Liberal staffer, Carlene Variyan, mentioned that Trudeau needs to act fast. If he wants to keep his position, he should solidify his cabinet and show he’s got a handle on things, especially with the incoming Trump administration.
But if he waits too long, things could get messy. Variyan warned that if he doesn’t show control soon, some members of his party might start jumping ship, and that could lead to a collapse of parliament early next year.
Another possibility is that Trudeau might decide to step down. The House of Commons is on break until late January, so he has some time to think about it. Former Conservative House Leader Peter Van Loan thinks Trudeau might be hesitant to leave because he doesn’t want to look like he’s being forced out.
If he does step down, the party would need to hustle to find a new leader. They’d have to set up a leadership race pretty quickly, which could be a challenge given the new rules that allow anyone to join the party.
On the flip side, Trudeau could just try to ride it out until the fall election. He could hope that things improve for the Liberals and that voters will be more forgiving by then. But that’s a risky move, especially with the NDP threatening to bring down the government if Trudeau stays.
There’s also the chance of a snap election. If confidence votes don’t go well, the government could fall sooner than expected. The opposition parties would need to team up to make that happen, but it’s definitely a possibility.
Lastly, Trudeau could choose to prorogue Parliament, which would pause everything and give him some breathing room. But he can’t do that indefinitely, as there are rules in place to prevent that from becoming a long-term solution.
In short, Trudeau’s got a lot on his plate. Whether he decides to shuffle his cabinet, step down, or try to hold on, the next few weeks are going to be crucial for him and the Liberals.
