Gran Canaria: Starting in March 2025, UK tourists heading to Gran Canaria will have to deal with some new rules. If you want to visit Roque Nublo, the island’s famous natural monument, you’ll need to book your spot online ahead of time.
This change is coming from the Cabildo, and it’s all about protecting the area. Roque Nublo gets around 1,500 visitors a day, so they want to keep things under control. The goal is to manage crowds, protect the environment, and make sure everyone has a great experience.
The Cabildo de Gran Canaria’s Department of the Environment is working with Public Works and Mobility on this. They’re trying to cut down on traffic and keep visitor numbers in check at this popular spot.
Starting January 15th, the reservation system will kick in. Tourists can plan their visits during busy hours, which are from 9 am to 5 pm. Each hour will allow only 60 visitors, and you can make up to five bookings.
When you book, you’ll get a QR code to show when you arrive. School groups can visit too, but they have to follow certain rules, with a limit of 60 students per day, split into groups if needed, as reported by Birmingham Live.
Tour companies can bring groups of 30 every two hours, as long as they have the right license. Locals from Tejeda and Artenara can visit by showing ID or proof of residency. Hikers coming from nearby trails won’t need to book in advance.
In May, it was reported that the rubbish levels at Roque Nublo were shockingly high. The island’s Environment Minister, Raúl García Brink, criticized some visitors for their “lack of civility,” saying they showed no respect for nature and left a mess in beautiful areas.
