Salford: So, there was this tragic incident involving a 15-year-old boy named Saul Cookson. He was riding an electric motorcycle when police started following him. This all happened on June 8, 2023, around 2 PM.
Things took a turn when Saul drove through some bollards that the police car couldn’t get through. Just moments later, he crashed into an ambulance and sadly didn’t make it. He was taken to Salford Royal Hospital but died from his injuries.
The Greater Manchester Police had to refer the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) since it involved a death after police contact. They found that the officers acted appropriately and didn’t engage in a chase, which was a relief to hear.
During the inquest, it was revealed that Saul died from multiple traumatic injuries. The IOPC looked into the situation and concluded that the police presence might have affected how Saul was riding, but there was no wrongdoing on the officers’ part.
Tributes poured in for Saul after his passing. His mom, Emma, described him as a “much-loved son, brother, grandson, and nephew.” She shared how sweet and kind he was, which really touched the community.
It’s just heartbreaking to see a young life lost like this, and everyone’s thoughts are with his family and friends during this tough time.
