Cape Otway: So, there was this bushfire that really caused a stir this week. It cut off around 100 campers, and it all kicked off in the early hours of Wednesday.
The fire started at about 2:20 AM on Blanket Bay Rd and Red Hill Track, burning through nearly 14 hectares. Can you imagine? Campers were told it wasn’t safe to leave or even return to their sites.
Chris Hardman, the chief fire officer from Forest Fire Management Victoria, mentioned that dozens of campers were stuck because of the flames. He said they were safe where they were, but still, it must have been a bit nerve-wracking.
About 150 people had to be evacuated from nearby campsites, and they set up drop-in centers at Apollo Bay Community Hall and Youth Hall for those affected. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and by 9 AM, the fire was under control.
Later on, investigators found out that the fire was likely caused by an unattended campfire. That’s just a big no-no! Now, the police are treating it as a criminal investigation.
They’re asking anyone who might have seen something on January 8 to come forward. It’s a serious reminder about the dangers of leaving campfires unattended. If someone is found guilty of causing a bushfire, they could face up to 15 years in jail.
Police are really stressing that a recklessly lit fire can be just as dangerous as a deliberately set one. It can lead to loss of life, serious injuries, and property damage. So, they’re on the lookout for anyone who might be responsible.
