North Yorkshire: A tragic incident unfolded when a police officer was hit by a lorry while she was helping out at a crash scene. PC Rosie Prior was just doing her job, assisting drivers involved in a collision on the A19 near Thirsk.
She had pulled over to help the folks in an Audi when the lorry came out of nowhere and struck them. Sadly, both PC Prior and the Audi driver, Ryan Welford, lost their lives right there on the scene.
There was also a teenage boy who got hurt and is now in serious but stable condition at the hospital. The lorry driver, a 65-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving but has since been released while the investigation continues.
PC Prior had only joined the North Yorkshire Police in May 2022 and was based in York. Her family described her as a loving mum and wife, and they’re heartbroken over this loss.
Chief Constable Tim Forber expressed deep sadness over the incident, emphasizing the support being provided to both families affected. It’s a tough time for everyone involved, and they’re asking for privacy as they grieve.
Ryan Welford’s family also shared their grief, remembering him as a hardworking and loving man who will be missed dearly. The accident happened around 9 am, and the road was reopened later that evening after clearing the debris.
Police are reaching out for any witnesses or anyone with dash-cam footage to help with the investigation. They want to ensure that all details are gathered to understand what happened that day.
