Thirsk: A tragic incident unfolded this morning when PC Rosie Prior was killed after being hit by a lorry. She was helping out at the scene of a crash on the A19.

Rosie had stopped to assist drivers involved in a collision between a black Ford Focus and a silver Audi. While she was on the roadside with the Audi driver and his passenger, a heavy goods vehicle came barreling in.

Sadly, both Rosie and the Audi driver, 41-year-old Ryan Welford, died at the scene. A teenage boy who was in the Audi is currently in serious but stable condition at the hospital.

The driver of the lorry, a 65-year-old man from Berwick-upon-Tweed, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving but has since been released under investigation.

Rosie’s family shared how much she meant to them, describing her as a loving mum and wife who will be deeply missed. Ryan’s family echoed similar sentiments, highlighting his dedication as a father and husband.

North Yorkshire Police Chief Constable Tim Forber expressed profound sadness over the loss of PC Prior, emphasizing the support being provided to both families during this heartbreaking time.

The scene was cleared later in the day, and authorities are urging anyone with dashcam footage or information about the incidents to come forward.
