Police Offered Man a Ride Home Before Tragic Incident on M602
An inquest reveals police offered a man a ride home before he was tragically killed on the M602 after being left at a tram station
Salford, UK, Benjamin Connor, Police, Inquest, M602
Salford: So, there was this tragic incident involving a guy named Benjamin Connor. The police were called to a flat because he was reportedly armed with a knife and wouldn’t leave. They ended up offering him a ride home instead.
During the inquest, they played body camera footage from the officers. It showed them asking Benjamin where he was staying, and he mentioned an address in Higher Blackley. They even said they’d give him a lift there.
But here’s the sad part: after being dropped off at Cornbrook Metrolink station, he walked into oncoming traffic on the M602 and was hit by a car. This all happened just a couple of hours later, and he sadly didn’t make it.
His mom, Sharon, had written to the coroner’s court before she passed away, expressing her concerns about how the police handled the situation. She felt they shouldn’t have left him alone, especially since he had no money or phone.
Benjamin had been out with some friends in Manchester before all this went down. The police were called around 12:50 AM after reports of him being aggressive with a knife, but no weapon was found.
Officers described him as being a bit up and down but engaging. They didn’t think he was in a bad enough state to be a danger to himself. They handcuffed him for a search, but it seems like they didn’t really consider his mental health or well-being.
After being taken to the tram station, he was hit by a car going pretty fast. The inquest is still ongoing, and more officers are expected to give their accounts. It’s just a really heartbreaking situation all around.
