Melbourne: The Jewish community is rallying after a synagogue was firebombed. Leaders are determined to rebuild it “bigger and better.” They’re not backing down.

Benjamin Klein, a board member, expressed hope that the new building would shine as a “beautiful jewel” in the community. They’re already planning a major rebuilding campaign.

Meanwhile, police are looking into whether this was a terrorist act. Two of the synagogue’s three buildings were severely damaged in the early morning fire, and the site is currently closed.

On Saturday, a bullet was found nearby, adding to the investigation’s urgency. Klein praised the police for their support during this tough time.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese mentioned that police would meet to discuss the attack’s motivation. He believes it was aimed at instilling fear, fitting the definition of terrorism.

Hundreds gathered in Ripponlea to show support for the synagogue. Among them was the granddaughter of one of its original architects, who emphasized the community’s resilience.

Political tensions have risen, with accusations flying about the government’s handling of anti-Semitism. Some leaders are pointing fingers, claiming the situation has made Jewish Australians less safe.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu linked the attack to Australia’s recent political decisions, while local advocates condemned the violence as unacceptable, regardless of the target.

They stressed that such acts of hate affect everyone, not just one community. The call for unity and strength in the face of adversity is clear.
