Melbourne: Police are stepping up their game for New Year’s Eve. They’re getting special powers to search for weapons randomly. This is all about keeping everyone safe during the celebrations.
Thousands of officers will be out and about starting Sunday. They’ll be in the Melbourne CBD and popular spots like St Kilda and Geelong. The goal? To make sure everyone has a good time without any trouble.
From Monday, the CBD will be a designated area under the Control of Weapons Act. This means police can search people for weapons and take them away if needed.
St Kilda foreshore and Geelong CBD are also on the list for New Year’s Eve. With all the festivities, there’s usually a spike in illegal fireworks. Police are warning everyone about the risks, which can lead to serious injuries or even fires.
Last year, there were over 60 incidents related to fireworks, and some people got hurt. If you’re caught with illegal fireworks, you could face hefty fines or even prison time.
Police are ready to keep the peace for the hundreds of thousands expected to celebrate. Superintendent Troy Papworth mentioned that there will be a strong police presence everywhere, from roads to train stations.
He also reminded everyone to celebrate responsibly. Look out for your friends, and if you’re drinking, don’t drive. It’s all about having fun while staying safe.
In recent years, most people have behaved well during the celebrations, with only a few causing trouble. But if anyone thinks they can misbehave this year, they’ll be met with a quick response from the police.
As the clock strikes midnight, a spectacular fireworks display will light up the Melbourne skyline, complete with lasers and projections from rooftops. Plus, public transport will be free from 6 PM on New Year’s Eve until 6 AM on New Year’s Day, making it easier for everyone to get around.
