Consett: So, the police got a tip-off from locals about a strong cannabis smell wafting through the town centre. They decided to check it out.
On December 6, a team of officers kicked down the door of a closed three-storey building. Inside, they found two guys and a whopping 492 cannabis plants along with a bunch of growing gear.
The two men, who are from Albania, were arrested on the spot. They were taken to court the next day and admitted to growing a controlled drug.
They were sent to Durham Crown Court for sentencing, and they even had an interpreter to help them out. The court learned that they had been in custody since their arrest.
The prosecutor mentioned that with nearly 500 plants involved, the starting sentence usually lands around three years, but it can go from two to six years.
The judge, Recorder Dafydd Enoch, wanted to know more about the defendants before making a decision. He ordered some pre-sentence reports to be prepared.
He noted that the guys had already spent four weeks in custody, and delaying the sentence wouldn’t change much since they were likely facing serious time.
Recorder Enoch plans to pass sentence in five weeks, and he made it clear that both would probably end up with custodial sentences.
Grifsha, 31, and Gjoni, 32, will stay in custody until their next court date on February 14, where they’ll have to face the music.
