Devon: Police commissioner Alison Hernandez is upset. She feels left out of talks about creating a super authority for the southwest. She worries the Isles of Scilly might be overlooked if Devon and Cornwall lead the way.

Hernandez called it “obnoxious” not to be included in discussions about devolving powers from Westminster. Her role covers the entire region, so she believes her input is vital.

The police and crime commissioner holds the chief constable accountable. This includes driving initiatives, securing funding, and setting the police budget.

However, her role could change if an elected mayor leads a new authority for about 1.5 million residents. Cornwall wants to keep its identity and resist merging with Devon.

In contrast, many of Devon’s major authorities support the idea, though not all councillors agree. Smaller districts are against being abolished.

Hernandez told the Devon and Cornwall Police and Crime Panel that her office has reached out to the government. She believes she knows the most about the region.

She urged councillors to consider the Isles of Scilly in their discussions. Hernandez emphasized the importance of respecting the islands in any future plans.

She expressed excitement about the government’s push for local government changes. However, she warned that these changes would come with costs.

Hernandez noted that having fewer people to communicate with could improve efficiency. She praised Cornwall for being proactive and engaged.

Plymouth City Council leader Tudor Evans supports a southwest authority. He believes it would give the region a stronger voice in Westminster.
