Connecticut: The new year is kicking off with a serious chill. A polar vortex is on its way, and it’s bringing some Arctic air with it.

This weather phenomenon is basically a big swirl of cold air that usually hangs out over the poles. But next week, it’s planning to drift south and hit us hard.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says we can expect a big drop in temperatures, especially in the eastern U.S., including our state.

Most of Connecticut is looking at below freezing temps for a good part of next week. So, if you’ve got plans, you might want to bundle up!

According to NOAA, the polar vortex will start affecting us around mid-next week, lasting through January 14. So, keep your hats and gloves handy!

AccuWeather’s meteorologist Alex DaSilva mentioned that we might feel the coldest blasts on January 3-4, January 7-8, and again on January 11-12.

Some areas, especially in the northern Plains, could even see heavy snow. And it looks like cities like Boston and New York might get hit with a snowstorm too.

As for the temperatures, AccuWeather is predicting some seriously cold days ahead. We could see lows between 0 to 10°F in Connecticut from January 8 to 10.

In fact, some parts of the country might even dip to -30°F! This could be the coldest January we’ve seen since 2011, according to AccuWeather’s lead expert.

So, get ready for some frigid weather, and stay warm out there!
