This center is led by the Australian Federal Police and will help train new officers. It’ll also serve as a hub for Pacific nations needing extra police support during major events or crises.
As part of a $400 million plan, they’re even building up to four more training centers in the Pacific. That’s a serious investment in law enforcement!
At the opening, PNG’s police commissioner, David Manning, will be there. He’s been busy cleaning house, letting go of over 400 officers—about six percent of the force—over the last two years.
The reasons? Incompetence, corruption, and other issues. PNG’s Internal Security Minister, Peter Tsiamalili, said it was necessary. “The force is better off for it,” he noted.
Tsiamalili also mentioned that law and order is crucial for the country’s growth. They’re not just firing bad cops; they’re also training senior officers in Sydney and bringing in experienced police from other Commonwealth countries.
This is all about boosting morale and tackling crime. While they’ve made progress, crime rates are still high in PNG. Just recently, Australia warned travelers to be cautious when visiting.
