Plea for Volunteers to Help Save Wick Scout Group from Closure
The Wick Scout Group urgently seeks volunteers to prevent its closure after 116 years of community service

They still have a good number of kids involved, but the lack of adult helpers is a real concern. The group has been around since 1909, helping young people grow and contribute positively to society.
The Scouts do all sorts of fun activities, from camps to community projects like litter picking and planting flowers. Recently, they had a great trip to PGL Dalguise in Perthshire.
Christine Waples, a Beaver leader, mentioned that they need adults and young people aged 14 and up to step in. “The more, the merrier,” she said. Losing two leaders before Christmas hit them hard, leaving some sections without guidance.
The Scout hall in Kirkhill is where the magic happens. They currently have 25 Beavers, 15 Cubs, and about 10 Scouts. That’s a solid number for Wick, and they’re quite active in the community.
Beavers are for kids aged six to eight, then they move to Cubs until they’re around ten, and finally to Scouts until they’re 14. The focus is on helping kids reach their potential and learn essential life skills.
They earn badges for their achievements, learning everything from cooking to map reading. “We offer fun and adventure,” Christine said. “But without volunteers, we can’t keep this going.”
Anyone interested in helping out can email enquiries@1stwickscouts.org. Christine finds volunteering rewarding and has been doing it for about 20 years. “It’s great to give back and see the kids learn,” she shared.
There’s not much training involved, just some safety checks. Once things are set up, it runs smoothly.
In 2022, Beavers even helped with a litter pick at a local park, earning their Community Impact badge.
