Wolverton Townsend: So, there was this plan to put up three new homes right next to The George & Dragon Country Pub. But guess what? The appeal got shot down.

The Shires, who wanted to build, submitted their application back in June 2023. But it didn’t sit well with the locals. They sent in 66 letters saying, “No way!”

People were worried about how those homes would change the vibe of the area. They didn’t want a suburban feel creeping into their little hamlet. Plus, there were concerns about losing green space and traffic jams from a new access road.

In August 2023, the planners in Basingstoke and Deane said no to the project. They felt it just didn’t fit with the rural charm of the place. They also mentioned that building there would mess with the historical significance of the pub and that the homes would be too close to some important trees.

Fast forward to January 2024, and the Shires decided to appeal. They argued that the site was perfect for new housing and wouldn’t mess up the area too much.

But on January 8, the planning inspector wasn’t convinced. They said there wasn’t enough evidence to show that the area really needed those homes. So, that was that.
