Darlington: Plans to buy Northgate House have hit a snag. The council’s been trying to reach the owners, but it’s like they’ve gone off the grid.

They want to tear down that old tower block as part of a big makeover for the town center. But, communication has been a real struggle. Last summer, things looked promising, but now? Crickets.

Back in 2021, the council laid out their vision to get rid of the “eyesore” and create something fresh. They’re aiming for a mix of homes and shops in that spot.

Mark Ladyman, who’s in charge of economic growth, said they had some talks and even got a property valuation done. But since sharing that info, it’s been silence from the owners.

They’re hoping to knock down Northgate House to make way for the new development. There was talk about using a compulsory purchase order, but that’s a whole complicated process.

During a recent council meeting, they discussed how to use government funds to revamp the town. The Towns Fund has already pumped money into other areas, but they’re still stuck on Northgate.

It’s not just Northgate, though. The council’s also having a tough time with plans for Victoria Road near the train station. They’re trying to get in touch with property owners, but it’s like pulling teeth.

Mr. Ladyman expressed his frustration, saying it’s disappointing not to get the engagement they need. The businesses are ready, but the owners? Not so much.

Councillor Chris McEwan pointed out that getting on the same page with landowners is crucial. But it’s tricky when you have owners and landlords not seeing eye to eye.
