Plans Unveiled for Battery Energy Storage System Near Osbaldwick and Murton
A new 249.9 MW battery energy storage system is proposed near Osbaldwick, aiming to enhance renewable energy capabilities and biodiversity.

York Energy Park Limited is behind the project. They’ve applied for planning permission to build a 249.9 Megawatt BESS. The system will store electricity and connect to the existing grid through a nearby substation.
The proposed site is on green belt land. There have been several similar planning applications in the area. North Yorkshire councillors are calling for a coordinated strategy for these systems.
The planning documents mention that over half of the site will see improvements to the landscape and ecology. This includes new grassland, native woodlands, and hedgerows to boost biodiversity.
The BESS is planned to operate for 40 years. After that, the site will be restored to its original condition.
However, there are objections. Osbaldwick Parish Council argues the farmland is high-grade and unsuitable for industrial use. They worry it will disrupt the rural separation between Osbaldwick and Murton.
A local resident also raised concerns about traffic. They noted that heavy vehicles would disrupt daily access to the area for at least 25 weeks.
Public consultation ran from October 14 to November 1 last year. Out of 26 responses, most were against the proposal, though some supported it. Supporters believe it’s crucial for transitioning to greener energy.
The consultation period ends today, February 3. You can view the application at the City of York Council’s planning website.
