Plans Unveiled for a 33-Storey Co-Living Development in Cardiff

Cardiff: Exciting news is coming from the heart of Cardiff! Plans are in the works for a massive 33-storey co-living scheme. This project, led by Watkin Jones, aims to create 400 rental bedrooms on a brownfield site at Custom House Street.
So, what’s co-living? It’s a modern take on communal living where folks have their own private bedrooms and bathrooms but share kitchens and living spaces. It’s all about community while still having your own space.
The design, crafted by local firm Rio Architects, includes some cool shared amenities like a gym, gardens, and co-working spaces. This trend is really taking off in cities like London and Bristol, and now it’s Cardiff’s turn!
The consultation period is set to run until the end of March, with plans to submit a formal application to Cardiff Council in the spring. Watkin Jones is teaming up with planning consultants Lichfields to make this happen. They’re even hosting two virtual webinars this month to hear from the community and gather feedback.
Iain Smith, the planning director at Watkin Jones, mentioned that these webinars are a great chance to connect with locals and get their thoughts. It’s all about making sure the final plans fit the needs of the community and future residents.
If everything goes smoothly with planning approval, construction could kick off before the year ends and take about 30 months to finish. Typically, Watkin Jones sells these developments to institutional investors once they’re complete.
Interestingly, last year saw the transformation of another site on Newport Road into a co-living space. That project is set to provide 206 apartments for rent, along with shared areas and office units. It’s all part of Cardiff’s growing landscape of modern living options!
