Frome: So, there’s some buzz in Frome about a new housing project. A developer, David Wilson Homes, is looking to build 140 new homes on the southern edge of town. They’re already working on another project nearby called Francis Fields, which has 226 homes.

They held a public exhibition recently to share their plans and get feedback from locals. Residents can voice their opinions until January 31, and a formal application is expected by the end of February.

The new site is right between the existing Francis Fields and Burchill Lane, close to a larger proposed community of 1,700 homes. Interestingly, the planning committee had some reservations about this project last December, but they’ll make a final decision soon.

Frome has been a hotspot for housing developments lately, partly because it’s outside the Somerset Levels and Moors area. This means developers don’t have to pay hefty fees for phosphate mitigation, which is a big plus for them.

There are also two other projects happening in the Keyford area. Wain Homes is building 70 homes just north of Francis Fields, and Curo is working on 198 homes and some commercial space nearby.

David Wilson Homes insists their new proposal stands on its own. They’re not trying to sneak in any elements of the larger Selwood Garden Community project. They’re just looking to add more homes to the area.

Out of the 140 homes they plan to build, 42 will be affordable, which meets the local council’s target. They’re still figuring out the exact mix of affordable housing, but they expect some will be for social rent.

They also mentioned that this development will help improve local services and infrastructure, although the exact contributions will be finalized later.

For the Francis Fields project, they’ve already committed over £1.2 million for new school places and funds for road improvements. If you want to share your thoughts on the new proposal, you can check out their website or contact them directly.

Once they gather feedback, they’ll submit their planning application, and the council is expected to make a decision by autumn. If all goes well, construction could kick off by mid-2026.
