Culcheth: The Raven Inn, located on Warrington Road, has received the green light for a new tap room with George Shaw Brewery. This is exciting news for the community!

Previously, plans were submitted to change the first floor of the pub into a tap room, along with a microbrewery in the future. The Raven Partnership also wanted to add a single-storey extension at the back, and now they’ve got the go-ahead.

The Raven Inn has a rich history, dating back to medieval times. In 2019, there was a proposal to demolish the building, which caused quite a stir in the community. People came together, signed petitions, and worked hard to save their beloved pub.

Thanks to their efforts, the ground floor has been restored and is now a community-run pub again. George Shaw’s Brewery has a traditional brewing background, once being the main brewery in Leigh with over 100 pubs in the early 20th century.

Although brewing in Leigh stopped in 1932, the name was brought back in 2019 by enthusiasts who started the George Shaw Brewery as a private company. The plan is to create a brewery tap above The Raven Inn, which will be a great addition.

Planning documents mention that the tap room will have several cozy spaces, perfect for gatherings and events like folk music nights. It aims to attract more visitors and make the pub even more appealing.

They also plan to develop a microbrewery as part of the next phase. This is a fantastic opportunity for the local area, and it’s great to see the community’s efforts paying off!
