Blyth: So, the planning for the Blyth Relief Road is finally moving ahead. It’s been a long time coming, and it seems like things are finally getting serious.

The Northumberland County Council gave the green light at a meeting on Tuesday. They even sent an updated business case to the Department for Transport, asking for some cash to help out.

But here’s the kicker: the costs have shot up from £46.8 million to £59.9 million since April. That’s a big jump, and there are worries about whether the promised Government funding will come through, especially with all the budget talks going on.

During the meeting, Coun Richard Wearmouth, the deputy leader, mentioned how crucial it is to improve the road network around Blyth. He thanked the locals for their patience while all this work is happening.

He’s hopeful that the current Government will stick to the promises made by the last one and fund the whole project. That would really help free up money for other important stuff.

The new plan includes a dual carriageway and upgrades to the existing road, making it two lanes between the A192 and A193. Plus, they’re adding a three-metre-wide cycle path, which is pretty cool.

They’re also planning a new link road to connect some local streets. Back in August, the Government didn’t say much about the council leader’s request for support, though.

Coun Glen Sanderson spoke up this week, emphasizing their commitment to Blyth. He pointed out all the work happening and how busy the Port of Blyth is.

He really hopes the new Government will be just as eager to see this road built as the last one was. They’re all in for Blyth, just like before.
