Newcastle: Liberal Democrat councillors are upset about Nexus’s plan to move. The new headquarters will cost £700,000. They call this move “extraordinary.” This is especially concerning since Metro passengers are facing disruptions after the Gateshead Flyover closed in December.
These disruptions have led North East Mayor Kim McGuinness to delay fare increases until July. The Lib Dems feel this move is poorly timed, given the current issues with the Metro service.
The North East Combined Authority (NECA) argues that Nexus’s current lease is ending this year. They believe the new location will save money in the long run. However, the Lib Dems are frustrated that this information was only shared in NECA’s budget papers.
Councillor Greg Stone expressed concerns about transparency. He feels that decisions are being made without enough public discussion. He believes the focus should be on improving services, not on new offices for executives.
The report claims that a new building will provide better value and a nicer working environment. It also states that the £700,000 cost is a temporary budget pressure for the 2025/26 financial year.
A NECA spokesperson responded, saying the budget was discussed publicly in November. They noted that the Mayor decided to freeze Metro fares until July due to the recent disruptions.
Nexus is also working on improving the Metro service. They plan to roll out new trains and enhance customer information through the Pop App. The move to smaller offices is necessary as their current lease ends after 25 years.
They believe the new offices will save money and be more energy-efficient, allowing for more investment in local transport services.
