Brockenhurst: The Cloud Hotel on Meerut Road might become a single house. Plans are with the district council for approval.

Currently, the Cloud operates as a small guesthouse with two part-time staff. Previous plans to create five cottages and a boutique B&B fell through.

A planning statement says efforts to sell the business have failed. Despite 18 months of marketing, there were no viewings or offers.

Economic challenges, like inflation and rising interest rates, made the earlier project unviable. The statement highlights the financial pressure on the current owners.

The Cloud operates on a lean model, needing all rooms available for guests. This setup makes it hard for an owner to live on-site.

Investors wanting to live there would have to reduce the number of lettable rooms. Thus, the building is better suited for residential use.

The main concern is whether changing the use will impact local tourism. Brockenhurst has plenty of serviced accommodation options available.

Avril Owton, a former Tiller Girl, once ran the Cloud. She took over after her husband passed away and was named Hampshire Businesswoman of the Year in 1995.

In 2016, she ended her long association with the hotel and listed it for nearly £2 million.
