London: A pharmacist named Akshay Sennik, just 30 years old, got himself into a heap of trouble. He was caught stealing Ozempic, a weight loss drug, from New Cross Pharmacy. This all happened between September 2023 and March 2024.
It turns out he was selling the stolen meds on the black market. The pharmacy staff noticed something was off when they saw a drop in their stock. That’s when they started digging into the issue.
Sennik ended up pleading guilty to theft at Bexley Magistrates Court last November. He could be looking at a two-year sentence, which is pretty serious. The exact value of what he stole isn’t clear, but each shot of Ozempic goes for about £175.
He’s set to be sentenced on April 3, so we’ll see what happens then. Interestingly, this is believed to be the first case of someone being charged for stealing Ozempic.
Just a heads up, Ozempic is only available in the UK with a prescription. It was originally designed to help people with type two diabetes, but it’s gained popularity for weight loss since its introduction in September 2023.
