Detroit: Dan Campbell came in with a bold promise to bite kneecaps, and wow, has he delivered! In just three years, he’s turned the struggling Lions into a top team in the NFL.
Sure, everyone expected the Lions to be good this year. But usually, the Coach of the Year goes to someone who surprises us all. That would be Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell this time around.
But let’s be real. It’s time to look beyond just the biggest surprise. We should give the award to the best coach. Campbell led the Lions through injuries and still managed to rack up fifteen wins, a record for the franchise. He stayed true to himself, bringing his tough, authentic style to the team and making them believe they could win it all.
Now, could his stubbornness catch up with him in the playoffs? Maybe. But this award is for the regular season.
In the most crucial regular-season game in years, Campbell came out on top against O’Connell.
It was a tight race. Heading into Week 18, it was neck and neck. The final game ended up being the deciding factor.
O’Connell might snag the more prestigious Coach of the Year award if voters stick to their usual criteria. But I’m going with Campbell. He pulled off a gritty season, overcoming injuries to secure the No. 1 seed in the NFC.
Other coaches worth mentioning include Sean Payton, who led the Broncos to their first playoff spot since 2015, and Andy Reid, who managed 15 wins with a Chiefs team that’s not as dominant as before but could still snag another Super Bowl.
And let’s not forget Dan Quinn, who turned the Commanders around, leading them to their best record since 1991. It was a close call, but it’s tough to give it to O’Connell when the Vikings lost both games to Campbell’s Lions.
