Peterhead: A former prison officer, Russell Maitland, has been sentenced for some truly awful crimes. He pleaded guilty to raping one young girl and sexually assaulting another. It’s just heartbreaking.
Maitland, who’s 37, got 13 years in prison at the High Court in Aberdeen. The attacks happened between 2011 and 2022, and both girls were under 13 at the time. Can you imagine the fear they must have felt?
The judge, Judge Summers, really highlighted the bravery of the girls. He said their courage in coming forward was key to getting justice. He also mentioned how they deal with the aftermath of what happened to them every day. It’s a tough road ahead, but hopefully, this conviction helps them heal.
After serving his time, Maitland will be monitored for three years. It’s a necessary step to ensure the safety of others. Detective Constable Karen Ivancic praised the victims for their strength throughout the whole process. She hopes this outcome brings them some peace as they move forward.
It’s a reminder that if anyone has faced similar situations, they should speak up. There are trained officers ready to help, and every report is taken seriously. The Scottish Prison Service also made it clear that they don’t tolerate such behavior and that Maitland is no longer with them.
