London: So, if you’re planning a trip outside the EU, listen up! The UK has some cool agreements that help you get healthcare while you’re away. This includes over 20 countries, not just the EU. But there are a few things to keep in mind.
These agreements let you access healthcare in places like Australia, New Zealand, and even some tiny islands. You can get treated like a local, which is pretty neat! But remember, it’s not a free pass for everything.
While you might get some medical treatment at a discount, they won’t cover things like getting you back home if you need to be repatriated. And if you have ongoing health issues, you’ll still need to keep an eye on those.
Don’t forget, you still need travel insurance. It’s super important to cover any unexpected situations. Plus, many of these countries will ask for proof that you’re eligible for their healthcare services.
What do you need? Well, it can vary, but usually, you’ll need to show you’re a UK citizen or resident. This could be your passport, driving license, or even a utility bill.
Take North Macedonia, for example. You can get emergency treatment there, but you’ll need your UK passport or proof of National Insurance. Just keep in mind, you’ll have to pay for any prescriptions.
Montenegro is a bit trickier. You can use a Global Health Insurance Card or your passport, but if you’re not a UK national, you’ll need both your passport and a valid GHIC or EHIC.
To get emergency care, you or someone else will need to take your documents to a local Health Insurance Fund branch. They’ll give you a hospital certificate, which you need to show to get treated without charge.
Since each country has different rules, it’s a good idea to check the UK Government’s travel advice before you go. And seriously, don’t skip on that travel insurance!
