Maidstone: A disabled pensioner, Michael Trottier, has had to leave his home after a big chunk of the ceiling fell in. This isn’t just a random incident; it’s part of a long list of maintenance issues he’s faced since moving in.
Michael, 69, moved into a one-bedroom flat for over 55s about 15 months ago, hoping to downsize from a three-bedroom place. He thought he was doing a good thing by freeing up space for a family, but now he wishes he hadn’t made the move.
From day one, he’s dealt with dampness, mould, and heating problems. His heating bill skyrocketed from £60 to £280 a month, even though he’s in a smaller place. It’s been a nightmare.
He’s had constant mould issues and even a ceiling collapse in the bathroom, which he claims had asbestos behind it. He’s been living with damp spots all over his flat, and despite Anchor Hanover’s attempts to fix things, nothing has worked.
Things hit a breaking point when the ceiling in his living room finally gave way, exposing the damp and mould he’d been living with for so long. Michael’s health has taken a hit too; he’s been diagnosed with respiratory issues due to the cold and damp conditions.
Now, he’s staying with relatives and can’t even go back to grab more clothes. Anchor has apologized and says they’re working to fix the issues, but Michael isn’t convinced. He feels like they’ve ruined his health and has lost all faith in them.
He’s even found negative comments about him in emails from staff, which is just disheartening. Michael just wants a safe and warm home. He gave up his larger house to help others, and now he feels like he’s been thrown aside.
Anchor’s operations manager has said they’re sorry for what he’s gone through and that they’re working on repairs. They claim the property is safe, but Michael isn’t so sure. He just wants to feel secure in his home again.
