Pembroke: Exciting news for Pembroke! The council has given the green light for a nearly £12 million project aimed at revitalizing parts of the town. This includes a £1.2 million contribution from the council itself.
During a recent meeting, the Pembrokeshire County Council’s Cabinet members agreed to sign a memorandum for a UK Government Levelling Up Fund award. This funding will support the Westgate to Eastgate project, which totals around £11.7 million.
The project has secured a hefty grant of over £10.5 million, with the council stepping in to provide a matching fund of about £1.17 million. This is crucial to meet the grant requirements.
It’s worth noting that Pembroke has been trying to secure this funding for a while now. They previously applied in June 2022 but didn’t get the funding. Thankfully, their revised application for the third round was successful!
The work is set to kick off in April 2025 and wrap up by March 2028. It will be divided into three main packages, as explained by Deputy Leader Cllr Paul Miller.
The first package focuses on improving connections from The Commons to Westgate and Main Street. This will include better pedestrian access to the town center, along with enhancements like improved lighting and public art.
The second package is all about Eastgate, which is seen as a key part of the overall plan. It involves some demolition and construction work to prepare the area for future development.
The third package aims to enhance Pembroke’s public spaces and green areas, connecting Main Street to the lovely green spaces around The Commons and the Mill Ponds.
Cllr Miller did mention that rising costs might require some adjustments to the original plan, as the funding value has changed since 2022.
Leader Cllr Jon Harvey expressed his excitement about the funding, highlighting that Pembroke is a fantastic town that has been facing challenges, especially for local businesses.
He emphasized the importance of community involvement in this project, saying that working closely with residents is essential for its success.
In the end, the council members unanimously supported the proposal and the necessary funding arrangements.
