Cardiff: It’s pretty alarming what’s happening in Welsh hospitals. Nurses are saying patients are being left to die on trolleys in corridors. They describe it as unsafe and totally undignified. A recent report really lays it all out there, showing just how bad “corridor care” has become.
The Royal College of Nursing put together this eye-opening document. It reveals that treating patients in hallways or chairs is becoming a daily norm in many hospitals across Wales. The report pulls from real stories shared by nurses, painting a grim picture of overcrowded facilities and a lack of resources.
One nurse shared how heartbreaking it is to see patients stripped of their dignity. They’re often shoved into corners, and families can’t even grieve properly because the staff are overwhelmed. It’s just not right.
Another nurse mentioned the lack of privacy and essential equipment. Patients don’t have access to things like oxygen or even call bells to get help. It’s tough to watch people suffer like this, and it’s taking a toll on the nurses too.
The report is a hefty 460 pages long and includes a lot of personal accounts from nurses who are forced to work in these conditions. They talk about the emotional strain and the risks to patients’ health. Some patients have to wait for days on hard chairs, and it’s just not acceptable.
There are serious concerns about safety too. Nurses have reported patients falling and getting hurt, and even some cardiac arrests happening in these unsuitable areas. It’s a real mess.
In response, the Welsh Government said they don’t support treating patients in non-clinical spaces. They acknowledge the pressures the NHS is under but emphasize the need for better care environments.
Helen Whyley from the RCN Wales stressed that every patient deserves dignity and quality care. She called for immediate action to fix these issues, saying it’s time to invest in the NHS and support healthcare staff.
Overall, the report highlights a critical need for more resources and better planning to ensure patients receive the care they deserve in a proper setting. It’s a wake-up call for everyone involved.
